I have been reading 'Influence' by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen each evening before going to bed, and contrary to how many people may feel about the girls themselves, their style, their businesses or their clothing lines, I have to say, purely in regards to this book, that it is actually very very good! So far the book has provided insightful details about the lives and careers of high profile figures within the fashion world like Diane Von Furstenberg and Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa, but it has also introduced me to several creative maestro's which I had never heard of.
For example, Alexandre de Betak- an extraordinary man behind the scenes whose artistic vision in producing catwalk shows is astounding. In a previous post on the Chanel runways I had obviously neglected to research the vital role producers play-in both designing, planning and making their ideas a reality. De Betak has produced shows for Victoria's Secret, John Galliano, Donna Karan, Christan Dior and Hussein Chalayan to name just a few! The inspirational shows he produces are more like performance art and have earned him the nickname 'The Fellini of Fashion'.
To give you a small example, de Betak has worked with the Mulleavy sisters on the Rodarte shows for the last four years. The plans below show his set designs for the A/W show (courtesy of http://www.sundancechannel.com/fullfrontalfashion/blog)
And this is a video of backstage footage and the catwalk from style.com. The A/W show was definitely a favourite- in particular due to the Nicolas Kirkwood heels which were amazing!!
