Last night, on a trip to the cinema with the girls (to see 'Youth in Revolt'- a comedy worth checking out), I saw the new promotional posters for 'Alice in Wonderland' out March 5th. Obviously my immediate reaction was one of uninhibited excitement and girly squealing for the joy that is Johnny Depp; but then later on I got to thinking- in films these days discussion predominantly focuses upon the female costumes and make-up, but what about the boys? The films which Tim Burton directs and produces are renowned for their gothic, macabre, eccentric visuals- who can forget the pastel painted houses and experimental hairstyles of 'Edward Scissorhands'? The gothic, horror forest landscapes of 'Sleepy Hollow'? The exceptionally insane exaggerated colours and camera angles of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'? The grimy London underworld of 'Sweeney Todd'? And Burton's most recent foray into Disney re-make looks set to be an extravaganza of colours, costumes, set-design and CGI to excel all his previous work. Johnny Depp is Burton's leading man of choice, but it is testament to extraordinary skill as a character actor that in each film he looks, moves and sounds entirely different.
Edward Scissorhands- an early emo, S&M inspired look. Who could have predicted that the scraggy bouffant would catch on and be imitated by teens and young- adults worldwide?
Ichabod Crane- a pale, bumbling, sentimental, introvert with impeccable choice in coats, shirts and neck ties.
Willy Wonka-I don't even know what to say about his look. Eccentric Edwardian-wear?!
Sweeney Todd- loving the muted colour palette of these looks, and especially the cord waistcoats, neck-scarves and cruella de-ville white streak
The Mad-hatter-he's mad, he's mental, he looks extremely scary, but I would love to steal his hat and bow-tie!
Ah Ichabond Crane....an ongoing love affair.
